Hollywood’s Backbone
Women are the future of everything. Always have been, always will be. The entertainment industry brings with it the harsh realities women face, exemplified through the Me Too Movement. Women have to work extra hard to prove their worth. I’ve experienced not being taken seriously just because I’m female. This phenomenon isn’t isolated to Hollywood though.
I grew up in New Mexico and by the time I began high school, I had developed a serious interest in film making. Val Kilmer, a close family friend, fueled my fire by bringing me to local film sets he was working on at the time. Val hired me for development, research, and script edits. While he proctored employment opportunities, he also exposed me to the challenges the industry presented. However, he witnessed me thriving on set and standing my ground, and became my biggest fan. I was also fortunate enough during this time period to be connected with Mark Romanek while working on a film in New Mexico.
I attended Columbia University in New York and studied theater. It was there that I developed instrumental relationships with people who not only became very successful in their career, but also served as my support network. I’m aware that attending an Ivy league educational institution does place me as a front runner, but beyond the foot in the door, it’s always been up to me to demonstrate my talent, to continue to make the right connections, and to persevere in reaching my dreams.
Starting as a director’s assistant for Mark Romanek in 2012 taught me how everything works from development to VFX. I assisted him on videos like Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” and upleveled to the producer role on Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” and Beyonce’s “Lemonade”. My plate was always full, there was no task too small or too big- it was my opportunity to prove myself and my work ethic. Mark will always be the person in my career who taught me what it really takes to stand out from the rest.
Working with big directors inspired me to find the next generation of filmmakers. I started working exclusively with new directors, such as Christian Coppola, where I became his manager and producer. Together we have curated a pretty incredible portfolio of work and we will continue to grow. We have shot commercials for Valentino, Netflix, Fendi and have a feature film in development we hope to shoot next year.
I think everyone in the industry has to work their way to the top. You are only successful at the top if you have an intimate understanding of each and every role. It’s more important now than ever to be more cognizant of just how much teamwork is essential in filmmaking and to hold the understanding that every single job on a film crew is necessary and should be respected.
