Come Home to Yourself: Trauma and Anxiety Coaching

By: Erika Straub, MA Psychology

I come from a dysfunctional home that carries generational trauma of addiction and abuse. There were secrets that were silent and scars that remained invisible. It was the blueprint that unconsciously drove me into contributing to the continuation of our family’s shared history and the development of crippling anxiety. What they refused to feel, I felt and carried for them, severely dysregulating my nervous system. But this was family. The only home I knew.

What I didn’t know was that home wasn’t a place, but a feeling. That no matter where I traveled to, or which city I lived in, or the structures of my shelter, or how much I self-sacrificed by being strong, I was only going to be left with a longing for a childhood home that didn’t exist and a persistent spell of anxiety that constantly festered just below the surface.

Anxiety shined the light on the truth that had been haunting me. I had to create a sense of home within myself in order to heal so much trauma. I had to redefine home so I could take it with me wherever I went. I had to love myself just enough to put down roots long enough to do the inner work to feel settled within my soul. It looked more like a reckoning than a homecoming. But that is what it was. I came home to myself, my body, and my life. I had to break the cycle or else anxiety would leave me homeless, broken, and suffering.

As an Anxiety Coach, I help women through digital services, to heal trauma so that they can feel safe in their skin and at home in their lives. Together we alchemically transform pain into purpose and release the energy of the past that has entangled and blocked the joys of the present. Unlike many therapies that solely focus on the rational mind, I take a holistic approach that emphasizes the leading role of the nervous system and the wisdom of the body. We focus on transitioning out of survival mode and returning to your natural rhythms. Trained in bottom-up modalities such as yoga, and top-down processing that incorporates inner child work and depth psychology, we enter the trauma through the nervous system and through the felt sense. While Polyvagal Theory may be a buzz word, once I teach you how to embody and apply this theory to your journey with anxiety, I guarantee only more self-compassion and acceptance will emerge.  (Click the link to download my FREE Polyvagal Theory E-book).
